Italian Fundamentals: Basic Grammar & Vocabulary-Essential Verbs-Common Idioms/Expanded Folding Card
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (August, 1992)
Average review score:

Perfect "at a glance" summary of Italian languageAs a teacher and author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Learning Italian, I often recommend this card to students interested in taking their language study further. It is hassle-free and the perfect tool for remembering concepts already studied but not necessarily memorized. Although I did not take classes with him, Prof. Piluso was highly regarded as both an individual and as a teacher when I was a student at New Paltz College.

Ivanhoe (Cliffs Notes)
Published in Paperback by Cliffs Notes (February, 1967)
Average review score:

A must for High school studentsI remember when I had to read Ivanhoe in high school. I thought I was going to have a stroke or a heart attack. Well, I found that the cliff notes provided me with a wealth of information about the plot, characters, summaries, and background information. Now that i'm older, I've found that Ivanhoe is truly a literary classic and should be read by everyone. However, the cliff notes will give you enough information that you won't have to read the book in a high school English class. For all you lazy high school students out there I guess this is really good news for you.

Japanese at a Glance: Phrase Book and Dictionary for Travelers (Barron's Languages at a Glance)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (October, 1992)
Average review score:

One of the best ways to learn useful Japanese phrasesThis book can be indispensable to travellers on their way to the Land of the Rising Sun. Beginning with an easy to understand pronunciation guide, the book lists thousands of practical phrases in a multitude of contexts, from taking a taxi to getting a haircut to haggling for the best price in the shops of Akihibara in Tokyo.
The phrases are transcribed into the Roman alphabet ("romanized") in a way that makes each syllable easy to understand; each phrase is also written in the Japanese script to the side -- in case you just can't make yourself understood verbally, you can just point to the phrase you're trying to communicate to your Japanese friend.
The book also includes a respectably sized Japanese-English, English-Japanese glossary, and brief explanations of the Japanese writing system and grammar.
This book has greatly aided my facility with Japanese and I highly recommend it.

Jean Paul Sartres No Exit and the Flies
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (December, 1989)
Average review score:

An incredible pieceSartre's "No Exit" not only provides a version of Hell that is the complete polar opposite of Dante's vision but he succeeds in making it seem scarier...and funnier. The fact that these three strangers start attacking each other like small children causes the reader (and viewer if watching a produced version) to secretly chuckle. One always wonders though as to whether they would fall into the same trap that these three do were they in the same predicament.

The Joy of Pasta (Barron's "Joy Of" Cookbooks)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (September, 1989)
Average review score:

Absolutely Delicious! This book does for Italian what that other book does for French. It is for all of us who know spaghettii with meat sauce is not the only pasta, or anyone who would like to try something different. The recipies are easy to follow and the end results a delight for both the eye and palate. A worthy addition to any kitchen

Joyce's Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man (Cliffs Notes)
Published in Paperback by Cliffs Notes (March, 1990)
Average review score:

Appreciation of this book divides two levels of readersPortrait is certainly not easy reading, but for those of us who take the extra time to read it it seems worth it. Written in the style that could only be Joyce's, it is interesting and challenging at the same time.

Kate Chopin's the Awakening (Bloom's Notes)
Published in Paperback by Chelsea House Pub (Library) (June, 1999)
Average review score:

stunning, sensual, thought provokingi chose this book for school because it was a short & easy read; i fell in love with it because, like few school books, i could relate so deeply to the main character. Edna Pontellier wakes up from a life in a dream and fights for self and independence- a struggle that anyone, especially adolescents, can identify with. I can't emphasize enough how beautiful and moving Chopin's prose is. Reading it was pure pleasure, and when self-realization and introspective thought comes along with that, you know the book is a winner.

Keys to Breastfeeding (Barron's Parenting Keys)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (May, 1991)
Average review score:

A lot of great informationThis book is great for any breastfeeding moms. It tells you everything you need to know from how we produce milk to mastitis. I bought this book when I was getting ready to have twins. I had nursed my first child and needed to find out how to make enough milk for two babies. I don't agree with everything in the book on continued co-sleeping, but this is a very informative book. I just read it again since I have just had my fourth baby. Stephanie

Keys to Buying a Foreclosed Home (Barron's Business Keys)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (April, 1992)
Average review score:

Excellent pocket sized guideThis is an excellent book on buying foreclosed homes. It is a basic guide and serves its purpose very well for the money. I've spent considerably more money on similar but larger books that were not as well written or informational. Provides checklists, contacts, glossary, payment tables, and 44 two page chapters or "keys" to buying foreclosed homes. The authors did not waste space, making this a little book that packs a big punch. It is very basic but provides a good foundation of information.
